Course Description

This course will examine past and current theoretical frameworks that have been used to understand how students learn mathematics. These theoretical frameworks will then be discussed in terms of how they have been and can be utilized to inform the practice of mathematics teaching. A particular focus will be on how research supports or refutes the so-called “math wars,” as well as the emphasis on standardized testing to demonstrate mathematical competence.

 

Course Objectives

In this course MA students will have the opportunity to:

  1. Engage with conceptual and empirical scholarship relevant to teaching mathematics for student understanding.
  2. Develop the pedagogical content knowledge central to teaching mathematics for student understanding.
  3. Understand the importance of motivation and affect in mathematics teaching and learning and in students’ understanding of mathematics.
