Course Purpose and Description:
The purpose of this course is to familiarize students with current ideas on the theory and practice of science teaching and learning.

 

Students in this course will examine past and current theoretical frameworks that have been put forth to explain how science is done, how students learn science, and how science should be taught. We will engage in comprehensive discussions about how these theoretical frameworks can best be utilized to inform a science teacher’s practice. You will also learn how to use both the science education research literature and the science teacher practitioner literature in making judgments about the efficacy about various theories and practices of science teaching and learning. Finally, you will conduct a small study that investigates the connection between teaching and students’ learning in a classroom setting. 

 

Course Objectives 

  1. Understand current ideas on the theory and practice of science teaching and learning.

  2. Investigate the connection between teaching and students’ learning in a classroom setting.

  3. Engage with the science education research literature and the science practitioner literature.
